Let Orange commissioners choose the best path forward on kids’ services

In his legendary “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. first spoke of the “fierce urgency of now.” It’s become a hallmark attitude among passionate advocates for change — including the ones behind a new tax to finance more services for children at risk in Orange County.

Led by longtime children’s advocate Dick Batchelor, and backed by a cross-section of esteemed community leaders, the Children’s Trust Committee of Orange County has been pressing Mayor Teresa Jacobs and commissioners for months to let voters decide in November on an additional property tax that would raise up to $58 million a year. We believe the campaign to put the tax on the ballot this year deserves a timely resolution — whether it’s yes or no — from the commission.
